Pneuma is an ancient greek word for breath of life, that which inspires locomotion both of the body and the spirit. Capturing the phenomenon of pneuma, the arrival of gallery visitors triggers a motion sensor on each of the individual boxes, turning on blowers, inflating and animating whimsical collages of discarded garments. The clothing for this installation was gathered from the streets of Oakland, at a scene resembling an illegal dumping, or eviction. I decided to give this person’s story a new life, with breath from the forced air of five, salvaged, squirrel cage blowers.
